So...here's my personal soundtrack of 2009, these are the 30 songs that will recall me this year, not every song was released this year, there some retro tunes, and some songs from 2008 but hey, it's not about the best songs from this year, this is just my personal perspective in music, so I hope you enjoy my selection, I'll post a link with a CD image to share these songs. Este es mi soundtrack personal del 2009, estas son las 30 rolas que me recordarán este año, no todas fueron lanzadas este año, hay algunas rolas retro, algunas del 2008, etc, pero no se trata de las mejores rolas de este año, esta es sólo my perspectiva personal de la música en este año, así que disfruten de esta selección. Les Savy Fav - Let's Stay Friends (2007)
I decided to review and recommend this album just for the simple reason that it has a very nice and refined sound, this band is amazing and there's a lot to say about them.
First, this is not a common album, I can say that because I think there's no happy songs or optimistic lyrics, the band says what it is in life and that is reflected in the music too. Nice riffs and cool solos are all around this album, they know what they're doing and sincerely this album brings me back to a particular time in my life and listen to it again is like being there again, but in a very good way.
I think this album was considered in the Top 10 Indie-rock albums in 2007 and that was what attracted me, and what a nice jewel I found, it's a shame they're not in the mainstream (I think they don't want to), just to show to all indie rock wannabe's what rock and roll really is.
Give it a listen and you'll find a mixture of sounds that will take you to emotions from excitement, nostalgy, sadness and even some joy.
My favourite tracks: Patty Lee, What Wolves Would Do?, Comes & Goes, Brace Yourself.
The Drums - The Drums EP (2009)
I knew about this band on a music blog (http://disorderyan.blogspot.com/), here you can find the most alternative music around, the name of this band caught my attention and after listened and watched a video of them in You Tube I finally decided to listen to their EP and it was again a very nice surprise.
After a few listens to this material you can easiy find that The Drums have a unique sound, something that is hard to achieve by most of today's indie bands. A mix between The Smiths, The Cure, New Order and a more happier sound of Joy Division can define the sound of this NY band. By the way, by now they are one of the coolest acts around in the indie scene, and despite their influences their sound is full of joy and happiness, very very optimistic.
Nostagic and modern are two words that came to my mind when I listen to these songs, those basslines take me directly to the 80's and make me think about NY street at night with a lot of glow lights and shiny clothes, some songs like Let's Go Surfing and I felt Stupid reflect these kind of emotions. Down by the water is the only calm track, but still, The Drums style is there, it may be my less favourite song because when I think about Indie I just want to have fun.
Give a listen to this EP and you'll be taken to a retro world but with a touch of joy...and more more optimistic.

Au Revoir Simone - Still Night, Still Light (2009)
Never heard about these three girls before, and yet, they've been around for a while (since 2004 I think), I listened to this album because it was a suggested pick for my customized account at an online music store when I was looking for a Ladytron album.
I listened to this album with little interest the first times it was spinning, suddenly when I was reading and listening to these songs there was a track that catched my attention inmediately: Only You Can Make You Happy, it's like an interlude-like song with a long and soft intro, begins with an analogue synth riff, then a wall of digital sounds drops blended with sweet vocals, it is a marvelous track.
As it is a synth band with a lot of programmed beats, everyone trends to think that they'll try to recreate an 80's sounds, but this is not the case, even when they may sound a little retro on some songs the whole concept is very innovative.
This is one of the best albums of the year, lot of people may think it is a repeated formula, you know, three synths, sweet vocals and good beats, but this band has a different vibe, you can feel this vibe on the songs and the whole album leaves a sensation of wanting more, I could say that there's a feel of tenderness too, I don't know if it's that femme touch but definitely there's something different with these chicks.
Give it a listen and you'll fall in love with them as I fell.

Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe (2009)
Ok...so I'm going to review a big one...a legend in the music industry...an institution...Depeche Mode. Every band has a bad album in their career and I thought it happened to them with Exciter in 2001, an album that never grew up in me, and it was not that bad to consider it their worst album, I always said Exciter was their weakest album, but then came a very acceptable effort in 2005 (Playing the angel) and I was expecting something similar for their 2009 album...but unfortunately it didn't happen.
I have to face it, they're one of my favourite bands, but Sounds of the Universe is so far away from Depeche Mode. There aren't songs as memorable as Shake the disease, or Enjoy the silence or even those with that Depeche feeling like A pain that I'm used to or even John the Revelator to name two recent examples of DM's songs with that sign in them.
Reading some reviews online some fans blame to Ben Hillier, the producer, but I don't think he's responsable of the poor results. Today's Depeche Mode sounds just different, Martin L. Gore (lyrics, guitars, synths) has now a lot of responsability, writing and arranging the songs it's not an easy job, before 1995 he had Alan Wilder on his side, but now I think that Martin is tired of doing almost all the creative work. The best album recorded by the band with the actual line up is Ultra and that's it, you can't expect a lot from Sounds of the Universe, even when Gore bought a lot of vintage hardware to produce the album.
I hope this is not the last DM album, if there is another album in their plans I hope it would be better than this, and if it is the last just listen to it and you'll know why this was the last DM album.

The Crystal Method - Divided by Night (2009)
Haven't heard anything of The Crystal Method for a long while, I was never into them really, but I had some good references about them, so I downloaded this 2009 album and the first thing I noticed was the good amount of collaborations a thing which was even better, it gives to the album a different vibe and a fresher sound. 12 tracks of pure electronic magic, eclectic and even some pop around. You can hardly feel the long running of this album (over 1 hour).
There's a track with Matisyahu ("Drown in the now") that mixes his style with the provocative style of TCM, the result is exceptional, you know, Matisyahy vocals, analogue synths, catchy samplig...this track is a bomb, the chorus is one of the best things I've heard this year.
Another wonderful collaboration on this album that is amazing is "Come Back Clean" with Emily Haines, I've always thought that a female voice sounds better with good synths and samples. Pay attention to this track, we're gonna listen to it on a video game soon, I can assure that, it just has that feeling.
The closing track, "Falling Hard" featuring some female or band called Meiko is a great track to close with, a down tempo ballad with good lyrics and even better vocals. This is one of that songs you can listen on a rainy day or at the end of a wild and funny night at some raver club.
Take a listen to this album, maybe it hasn't received a lot of attention but, this is a piece of quality.

Metric - Fantasies (2009)
I knew few about this band and honestly I must admit that I just listened to this album because it was on the Amazon.com list of the best 2009 albums.
Fortunately I received such a good surprise that this album has been spinning on my PC and on my Car cd player (yes!, it still has one of those old cd players, lol). Simple songs, simpe lyrics, effective music, vocals are good and production seemed to be very well driven.
First song "Help I'm Alive" is very catchy, there's an acoustic version included on some editions, both versions are nice. The album goes on very fluently that you can hardly feel it is going, there are some good ballads and a very eclectic mix of alternative, indie rock, blended with good analogue synths, that electronic feel is just the perfect complement for the album.
Call it pop-rock, alternative or even indie, this is an honest band, I think they're not trying to picture a pose of "yeah, we play good songs", that's another factor that makes this album so good. I hope they're doing well on charts and on their career.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz (2009)
Tenía muy pocas referencias de esta banda y lo poco que sabía era que hace un par de años eran teloneros de una de mis bandas favoritas (DEPECHE MODE) y que incluso estaban al borde de la separación, había escuchado superficialmente su disco anterior (creo) titulado FEVER TO TELL el cual es muy bueno y que ultimamente decidí escuchar al quedarme pasmado con la calidad de IT'S BLITZ que suena muy diferente y al parecer es un viraje en el sonido de la banda, a pesar de ser su tercer material, dice mucho el que ya esten experimentando con nuevos sonidos muy temprano en su carrera.
El álbum empieza con un sonido muy fresco y hasta un tanto agradable, ZERO es el tema que abre el disco y lo hace de manera muy fluida, con una mezcla entre punk, indie, pop, electro, una mezcla muy bien lograda que se extiende hasta HEADS WILL ROLL donde tienen un gran momento gracias a la voz de KAREN O que hace un gran trabajo en el coro, hasta el momento uno de mis temas favoritos del disco y en donde siguen mezclandose beats programados, sintetizadores y guitarras, sin duda será un clásico, se abre camino para la popera SOFT ROCK que parece ser, por la letra, un tema mas introspectivo pero muy dulce para el sonido al que la banda nos tenía acostumbrados, sonido que puede ser escuchado en temas como DULL LIFE y SHAME AND FORTUNE ambos aderezados de esa rebeldia y subersividad caracteristica de la banda.
Vienen luego temas en donde la experimentación con nuevos sonidos es evidente, rolas caracterizadas por ser más downtempo y hasta un poco conceptuales en si mismas, es el ejemplo de SKELETONS, LITTLE SHADOW y RUNAWAY este último con una atmosfera melancólica muy bien lograda que incluso recuerda mucho a aquellas atmosferas logradas por MERCURY REV en ALL IS A DREAM, RUNAWAY recuerda incluso sonidos tan remotos como aquellos que se lograron en muchos discos psicodélicos de los 60's, sin duda otro de los temas fuertes en el álbum. Esta tripleta de canciones tienen varios elementos en común, como el que hacen uso de instrumentos de orquesta que se escuchan muy bien definidos como los violines, algo de vientos e incluso percusiones, no hay que perderles la pista ya que son temas muy bien logrados y que se disgrutan bastante.
Al final del disco los temas DRAGON QUEEN y HYSTERIC nos recuerdan el inicio del album, con temas que vienen sonando a pop con una mezcla importante de electro, hay que poner atención en ambos temas ya que se trata de un sonido muy distinto a YEAH YEAH YEAHS sin embargo complementan de manera fabulosa a todo el álbum en si quedando como un album redondo y de gran calidad.
El aventuramiento de la banda hacia nuevos horizontes al parecer trajo resultados positivos y sin duda IT'S BLITZ será uno de los álbumes dentro del Mainstream que saldrá muy bien parado ante las críticas, por lo pronto recomiendo que le den una escuchada a este tercer esfuerzo discográfico de la banda lo cual nos demuestra que hasta ahora la banda se encuentra muy lejos (eso esperemos) de una separación.
The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die (2009)
Oh, qué decir de este nuevo trabajo de THE PRODIGY, aún suspiro al recordar los ritmos tan industriales y únicos que nos regalaba LIAM HOWLETT con THE FAT OF THE LAND uno de los mejores discos de los 90's y que como muchos lo consideran puso estándares muy altos para el breakbeat, big beat, techo, industrial y todo lo que pueda derivarse de ese excelente disco de 1997.
Para el 2009 THE PRODIGY regresa y al parecer lo hace en plan grande, con INVADERS MUST DIE al parecer resucitan de una falsa muerte que muchos de sus fans (incluido yo) le habían dado a esta banda y todo debido a un álbum bastante débil en el 2004 (ALWAYS OUTNUMBERED NEVER OUTGUNNED) que quizá sufrió demasiado porque fue el sucesor del ya mencionado álbum de 1997 que terminó siendo la obra maestra de THE PRODIGY.
Desde los primeros acordes que podemos escuchar de los sintetizadores de HOWLETT y compañía parece que quisieran llevarnos a principios de los noventa en donde tuvo sus origines la banda y una época donde se les recuerda su irreverencia, cuando alguien escucha el primer corte de este álbum piensa que si de esta manera va a estar todo el recorrido, sin dudas será un gran álbum, THE PRODIGY no nos decepciona y nos muestra que INVADERS MUST DIE canción que también nombra al disco es solamente una probada de lo que viene.
Con THUNDER y COLOURS se aproximan momentos altos y excitantes y es cuando ya uno se encuentra envuelto totalmente en los ritmos de ese PRODIGY que todos añoramos, parece ser que la banda se ha reinventado a si misma haciéndolo como mejor pudo haberlo hecho: volviendo a hacer lo que saben, de cierta manera auto-repetirse con lo que hacían entre 1992 y 1995, pero si una banda ha de plagiarse a si misma que lo haga con la maestría con la que lo hace THE PRODIGY. Por cierto cuando uno llega a TAKE ME TO THE HOSPITAL, la adrenalina sube, una de las mejores canciones del álbum y que es un soundtrack ideal para los disturbios de Los Angeles de 1992.
Si querían escuchar algo muy similar a THE FAT OF THE LAND (cosa de la cual muchos se decepcionaron en 2004) el corte de WARRIOR's DANCE muestra ciertas resemblanzas a esa (gran) época. RUN WITH WOLVES, WORLD'S ON FIRE y PIRANHA imprimen muchisima energía y para los que nos tocó vivir la primera mitad de los 90's con estas rolas volveremos allá, así que a desenpolvar en Nintendo para ponerse ad-hoc.
El álbum cierra con un outro poco común y muy funky, muy distinto a lo que podemos escuchar en todo el disco pero que se encarga de nivelar los ánimos después de haber escuchado algo tan intenso por cerca de 50 minutos, los cuales dejan al escucha con un sabor de boca muy noventero, sin dudas un gran regreso de una gran banda, THE PRODIGY esta más vivo que nunca y puede que aquí tengamos uno de los mejores discos del 2009.
¿Qué se escucha al final de WARRIOR's DANCE? ¿extracto de alguna película o sample de algun hecho real? La verdad se escucha un poco escalofriante.
James Zabiela - Renaissence Master Series 12 (English Review)
First cd is a subtle mixed set with downtempo rhythms that go from organic chill out with the opening track on which you can even listen to some acoustic guitars in the background, this kind of atmospheres surround us since the begining synthetized wall of sounds just keep growing as the set goes by. An epic moment is achieved with the track AMO BISHOP RODEN from BOARDS OF CANADA, an ambient classic and very familiar with those who like IDM.
Pretty soon the beats start going up, but not for long, with the kind-of breakbeat ED CHAMBERLAIN's ZARATHUSTRA, Zabiela pick up the mood and then it's delightful to listen to some BLIP HOUSE with MODESELEKTOR's VOTE OR DIE, then Zabiela relaxes us with some more of chill out.
Final part of this set begins to prepare the field for the dance floor and then we hear some JUNGLE and DRUM AND BASS like rhythms closing with the very sweet and melodic track DEPARTING GATE from NEAR THE PARENTHESIS.
Second part of this set begins with a sample from the Heathrow Airport scanning machine, a place where Zabiela has been for so many hours, soon after this smooth intro we listen to some HOUSE POP, (Komytea - Afghanistan) which prepares us for the dance floor, even if you don't stand up to dance it's a good track to just listen to. We advance through and listen to SURRENDER by PAUL WOOLFORD where beats are already at its highest, trance begins to leave a track, Zabiela lets us hear some more IDM blended with some Trance and a little bit of Tech House with EXTRAWELT's ADDED PLANET and SPEKTRE's SURFACE SCAN, then comes a Zabiela's track (DARKNESS 2) which follows that same steps with really good rhythms.
The set goes on with party and dance inciting beats with Tech and Progressive House oriented rhythms and even some minimalistic ressemblance (ENERGY FLASH from HUGGY AND DEAN NEWTON) that carries us by the same way with ALEX MILLAN's MODERN LOVE.
Disc closes with LUOMO's LOVE YOU ALL (a lovely vocal track) that guarantees an epic ending, I think it's cool when this kind of closings are present on this sets, next we have a VOCAL POP HOUSE track OLIVER KOLETZKI's SINCE YOU ARE GONE.
This album shows us lots of today's electronic scene faces, if you want to know further more about this genre, if you listen to this album you'll be surprised with the Zabiela's mix mastering.
If you want a succesful lounge party use disc one, if you want a surrounding house party, use disc two.

James Zabiela - Renaissence Master Series 12
ALBUM: RENAISSENCE MASTER SERIES VOL.12

Haciendo su tercera aparición para la disquera Renaissance el DJ británico JAMES ZABIELA viene a deleitarnos con un set realmente envolvente, este compilado doble mezclado con gran maestria hace honor al nombre de las series de Renaissence, en donde igual han estado SATOSHI TOMIIE, DAVE SEAMAN, SANDY RIVERA, HERNAN CATTANEO, etc. ya que esta lleno de muy buenas selecciones repartidas en 2 discos de larga duración y que como siempre, se queda corto y nos deja con ganas de mucha más buena música.
El primer disco es un set mezclado sutilmente y que presenta ritmos downtempo que igual van desde el chill out orgánico con el track que abre este disco donde hasta se puede escuchar una guitarra acústica, las atmosferas nos envuelven al inicio de este set para que esa pared de sonido sintetizado vaya incrementandose conforme avanza el disco. Uno momento memorable se acerca y ese es con el track de BOARDS OF CANADA, AMO BISHOP RODEN, un clásico ambient y viejo conocido de muchos a quienes les agrade la IDM.
Pronto los beats empiezan a subir de tempo, pero no será por mucho tiempo, con el track de ED CHAMBERLAIN, ZARATHUSTRA, Zabiela levanta un poco los ánimos con ritmos que rayan un poco en el BREAKBEAT para después dejarnos con VOTE OR DIE de MODESELEKTOR que nos deleita con ese BLIP HOUSE calmado pero muy disfrutable y luego dejarnos caer nuevamente en un Chill Out muy relajante.
La parte final de este set empieza a preparar el terreno para la pista de baile y ZABIELA lo hace bien con ritmos que van desde el JUNGLE y hasta un poco de DRUM AND BASS, para al final cerrar con una outro muy dulce y melódico de NEAR THE PARETHESIS con su track DEPARTING GATE.
Para la segunda parte de este set inicia con un sampleo de la máquina de escaneo del aeropuerto de Heathrow un lugar donde seguramente Zabiela ha pasado varias horas, después de este intro deja caer los beats con un track a 120 bpm (Komytea - Afghanistan) que va preparando el terreno para la pista de baile y que incluso si uno no se anima a bailar es igual de disfrutable el sólo hecho de escucharlo. Viene luego el track SURRENDER de PAUL WOOLFORD en donde ya suben los Beats por minuto y el trance empieza a dejar su marca, sin embargo Zabiela insiste en deleitarnos con un poco más de IDM aderezada de Trance y un poco de Tech House con Added Planet de Extrawelt y Surface Scan de Spektre, luego viene un track del propio Zabiela (Darkness 2) que va por el mismo camino pero levantando un poco más los beats.
El set continua ya con los beats que insitan a la fiesta y totalmente al baile con ritmos orientados más al Tech House con un poco de Trance por ahi hasta que aparece un track un tanto minimalista con el track Energy Flash de Huggy & Dean Newton que nos lleva por el mismo camino con el siguiente track de Alex Millan (Modern Love).
El disco cierra con el track Love you all de LUOMO con Apparat lo que garantiza un cierre épico, en lo personal es genial si un set de este tipo se cierra con una rola cantada como la es esta que en verdad es maravillosa, al final viene un track para relajar los pies pero no del todo para los que aun quieren más, este track (Oliver Koletzki - Since You Are Gone) suena un tanto HOUSE-POP pero aun así muy disfrutable.
Este álbum doble presenta muchísimas facetas de la electrónica actual, si quieren conocer más allá de lo que estamos expuestos en cuanto a este género, al escuchar este álbum se llevarán una grata sorpresa ya que cada track ha sido seleccionado minuciosamente (claro con Zabiela ya con su grado Master) para ir uno tras de otro y captar la atención de los escuchas y para los que quieran sacarle brillo a la pista también.
Si quiere una fiesta lounge exitosa use el disco 1, si quiere una fiesta house envolvente use el disco 2.
